Overview
- Practical experience with cranes, meeting the standards outlined in British Standard 7121: Safe Use of Cranes.
- Completion of a CITB Health, Safety, and Environment (HS&E) test for managerial and professional personnel within the last two years (prior to the course or CPCS test).

This course provides a comprehensive understanding of lifting operations and prepares participants for the responsibilities of an appointed person. Key topics include:
Roles and Responsibilities
- Duties of the Appointed Person, Crane Supervisor, Crane Operator, Slinger Signaller, and Crane Erector.
Legislation and Safety
- Overview of laws, regulations, and codes of practice related to lifting operations.
Lift Planning
- Requirements for basic, standard, and complex lifts, including special considerations for lifting personnel or loads from height.
Crane and Equipment Knowledge
- Identifying crane types, capabilities, and limitations.
- Maintenance, inspections, and testing of lifting equipment and accessories.
Practical Skills
- Calculating sling sizes, load weights, and centers of gravity.
- Selecting appropriate lifting accessories.
- Demonstrating effective load guiding and signaling techniques.
- Positioning cranes and identifying potential site hazards.
Outcome
- Upon successfully passing the theory and practical tests, participants will be awarded the Red Trained Operator Card, valid for two years.
- Next Steps
- To progress further, participants can register for the NVQ Level 5, which qualifies them for the Blue Competent Operator Card valid for five years.

Renewals
The A61 Appointed Person – Lifting Operations Certificate is valid for five years. To renew, candidates can undertake a one-day refresher course to extend certification for another five years.
Alternatively, candidates nearing the end of their certification period may upgrade to the SMSTS (Site Management Safety Training Scheme) qualification, which qualifies them for roles such as Site Manager.
On-Site Training
We offer on-site training for companies with a minimum of six participants. A trainer can deliver the course directly at your venue.
