Course description
Across the UK, ambulance services play a vital role in saving lives by transporting individuals in medical emergencies. In addition, non-emergency transport services provide essential support, helping patients travel to and from healthcare facilities and medical appointments using specially designed ambulances and vans. You can be a part of this noble profession by obtaining your licence to work as a professional ambulance driver. HGVT Training Services (HGV Training Centre) is one of the few organisations in the country offering comprehensive ambulance driver training.
Ambulance Driver vs. Paramedic: Understanding the Difference
Before pursuing a career in this field, it’s important to understand the distinction between an ambulance driver and a paramedic. Some ambulance services require drivers who are also trained paramedics, meaning you would need to complete paramedic training prior to applying for such roles. Conversely, if the position is for a Patient Transport Service (PTS) driver, paramedic training is not necessary.
Since hiring practices vary across ambulance services, you’ll need to review job descriptions carefully to understand their specific requirements. Some organisations employ paramedics who also serve as drivers, while others hire separate drivers dedicated solely to operating ambulances. If the job description is unclear, don’t hesitate to ask for clarification.
Licensing Requirements for Ambulance Drivers

You may come across information online suggesting that a special driving licence isn’t necessary to operate an ambulance, as some can be driven with a standard Category B licence. While this might occasionally be true, it is more common for ambulance drivers to require a Category C1 licence. This licence allows you to drive vehicles weighing between 3.5 and 7.5 tonnes MAM (Maximum Authorised Mass), which is essential since most ambulances exceed 3.5 tonnes when fully loaded with equipment and patients.
Individual ambulance services may also impose additional training or requirements beyond the standard Category C1 licence. It’s important to confirm these details with each service you’re considering.
Regardless of specific requirements, excellent driving skills are a must for any ambulance driver. You will be responsible for transporting individuals with medical emergencies or mobility challenges, ensuring their safety and well-being. Safe, attentive, and responsible driving is non-negotiable in this role.
Ambulance Driver Training with HGVT
At HGVT Training Services, we offer intensive ambulance driver training designed to help you earn your licence quickly and affordably. Our programme begins with the foundational Category C1 training and progresses to more specialised instruction in patient transport.
Our comprehensive training programme is structured into three key areas:
- Driving Theory – Just as you needed to pass a theory test for your Category B licence, ambulance drivers must demonstrate their understanding of ambulance-driving principles. We’ll equip you with the knowledge you need to succeed.
- Practical Driving Skills – Operating an ambulance requires a unique set of skills. Our training covers all aspects of safe and effective ambulance driving, ensuring you develop the confidence and ability to maintain an excellent driving record.
- CPC Training – Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) regulations require all commercial drivers to complete an initial CPC programme before obtaining their licence. Our programme includes this initial CPC training, as well as ongoing CPC courses to help you meet the mandatory 35 hours of training required every five years.
