This entry-level qualification is the foundational requirement for anyone wishing to work on or near the railway. While it does not permit direct interaction with the railway infrastructure<\/strong>, it enables individuals to carry out a range of support roles, such as vegetation clearance, general labour, and other non-infrastructure tasks. Most employers require candidates to hold this competency before offering employment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The PTS Initial course includes two components:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • E-learning<\/strong> (completed independently before attending)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Two days of classroom and practical training<\/strong> covering AC (Overhead Line)<\/strong> and DCCR (Conductor Rail)<\/strong> environments<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Completion of the E-learning module and its assessment is mandatory<\/strong> before attending the practical sessions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The course aims to equip delegates with the knowledge and skills to:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    • Understand and carry out their duties and responsibilities when working on or near railway lines<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Safely follow a Safe System of Work<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n

          Competency Duration<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
            \n
          • Validity<\/strong>: The PTS qualification is valid for 2 years<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
          • Renewal<\/strong>: A one-day re-certification<\/strong> course must be completed within 56 days before the expiry date<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
          • Lapsed Certification<\/strong>: If not renewed in time, the full PTS Initial course<\/strong> must be retaken<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

            Additional Information<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

            Holding a valid PTS competency<\/strong> grants access to Network Rail sites, but does not permit physical contact with the railway infrastructure<\/strong>. To perform tasks involving track maintenance or engineering, individuals must also complete Track Induction training<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Pre-requisites<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

            To be eligible for the PTS Initial course, individuals must meet the following criteria:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

              \n
            • Be at least 16 years old<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
            • Be sponsored<\/strong> by a RISQS-approved railway company<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
            • Have Primary Sponsor approval<\/strong> prior to booking<\/li>\n\n\n\n
            • Meet medical fitness standards<\/strong> as defined in Network Rail Standard NR\/L2\/OHS\/00124<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
            • Pass a Drugs & Alcohol<\/strong> test in accordance with NR\/L1\/OHS\/051<\/strong>, conducted no more than 3 months<\/strong> before training<\/li>\n\n\n\n
            • Successfully complete E-learning training and assessment<\/strong> before attending<\/li>\n\n\n\n
            • Demonstrate sufficient proficiency in English<\/strong> as outlined in Network Rail Specification NR\/S\/CTM\/021<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
            • Observe a mandatory 12-hour rest period<\/strong> before the course, in line with Working Time Regulations (1998)<\/strong> and Network Rail Standard NR\/L2\/OHS\/003<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

              Assessment and Results<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

              Upon successful completion of the course:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

              • Your PTS Initial (AC\/DCCR)<\/strong> competency will be uploaded to your Sentinel profile<\/strong> within 24 hours<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
              • In the event of any upload issues, efforts will be made to resolve them within 5 working days<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
